On Thursday, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla said he would discuss a $5B investment in xAI, his artificial intelligence startup, as the EV maker looks to increase efforts to expedite the development of its self-driving and robotaxi products.
In recent years, the ambitious self-driving project has had to face numerous legal and technical hurdles and Tesla is now ramping up its AI infrastructure to train models for its autonomous technology.
In a post on X Musk said it looked like the public was in favor and he would discuss the issue with the Tesla board. This came after a poll on X showed close to 68% of respondents felt the company should invest in xAI.
During Tesla ’s earnings conference call earlier this week, Musk said xAI would be able to help in building up the new Tesla data center and in advancing full self-driving. He added that there were opportunities to integrate the Grok chatbot with Tesla ’s software.
On Tuesday, Tesla ’s automotive profit and gross margin for the second quarter was lower than Wall Street estimates as the company offered incentives and reduced prices to boost sales.
Musk launched xAI last year, in an attempt to compete with OpenAI, the ChatGPT maker, its backer Microsoft and Alphabet’s google .
