The memecoin DOGS, which operates on The Open Network (TON), has announced plans to donate over 6 billion tokens, valued at around $4.5 million, to various nonprofit organizations around the world. This initiative coincides with the planned launch of a charity portal slated for late November that allows registered nonprofits to apply for funding. This effort underscores DOGS’ dedication to redirecting a significant portion of its unclaimed airdrop tokens for charitable purposes.
The distribution process will take place over the upcoming year, with the 6 billion DOGS tokens allocated to chosen organizations after a careful evaluation. Among the notable partnerships initiated by this program is a collaboration with Best Friends Animal Society, a U.S.-based nonprofit that focuses on supporting homeless animals. Through this partnership, DOGS aims to raise awareness within the cryptocurrency community about animal welfare and contribute towards achieving a 90% no-kill benchmark for animal shelters by the year 2025.
The DOGS cryptocurrency project finds its roots in a drawing by Pavel Durov, co-founder of Telegram, which has become a symbol of Digital Resistance, particularly following events surrounding his arrest in France. This branding also reflects Durov’s commitment to liberal thought, as illustrated by his past experiences in 2011 when he faced pressure to censor certain social media content.
Since its launch in September, the DOGS token has gained considerable traction, reaching approximately 17 million users through an airdrop, while its facilitating app on Telegram has attracted more than 53 million users. Unfortunately, despite its early success, DOGS has experienced significant volatility, peaking at an all-time high of $0.0016 shortly after launch but subsequently falling over 54% as the memecoin market faces a decline.
