Strong Start for Crypto ETPs in 2025 Amidst Record 2024 Gains

The year 2025 has begun positively for cryptocurrency investment products, with global crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) experiencing $585 million in inflows within the initial three days of January, according to a report by CoinShares. However, this surge did not completely counterbalance the significant selling pressure faced towards the end of 2024, which resulted in $75 million in net outflows during the last two trading days of the previous year.

Despite this dip towards the end of 2024, the year concluded as a remarkable period for crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with total inflows reaching $44.2 billion. This figure represents a substantial 320% increase compared to the previous high of $10.5 billion recorded in 2021. The launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the United States in early January 2024 played a significant role in driving the majority of these inflows.

Bitcoin ETPs were the standout performers in 2024, racking up $38 billion in inflows, which constituted 29% of the total $130 billion in Bitcoin assets under management. Meanwhile, Ether-based ETPs showed significant recovery towards the end of the year, achieving full-year inflows of $4.8 billion, equating to 26% of the total $18.6 billion of Ether assets under management.

The total assets under management for crypto ETPs reached $160.6 billion for the year, boosted by inflows of $438 million into XRP products and an additional $257 million into multi-asset ETPs.

Geographically, the United States emerged as the leading buyer of crypto ETPs, with $44.5 billion in inflows. By contrast, Canada stood out as the largest seller, experiencing $707 million in outflows. Other countries like Sweden and Germany also faced outflows amounting to $682 million and $328 million, respectively, which overshadowed inflows from markets such as Switzerland and Brazil.
