Russian Gas Transit Route Via Ukraine to Europe Operational – Minister

On Thursday, German Galushchenko, the Ukrainian energy minister said the transit route via Ukraine for Russian gas deliveries to Europe is operational, after reports of hostilities at the Sudzha gas transit station.

On Wednesday, Russia said it was fighting intense battles against Ukraine’s forces that had crossed its border close to the major Sudzha natural gas transmission hub, in one of the biggest incursions into Russian territory since the war started.

The Sudzha gas measuring and transfer station in the Kursk region of Russia is the only point where Russian natural gas can enter the Ukrainian gas transmission system for transport to Europe.

Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine’s gas transmission operator said that Russian natural gas was still transiting normally via Ukraine to Europe.

The operator said later Russia’s Gazprom was planning on shipping around 41.7M cubic meters of gas via Ukraine on Friday, versus 37.25 mcm planned for Thursday.

At the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in May 2022, the Ukrainian transit operator halted the transport of gas via an alternative branch line through the Sokhranivka transit point.

Ukraine said Russian forces had begun taking gas moving through Ukraine and transiting it to two Russia-backed separatist regions in the country’s east.
