Crypto Influencer Under Fire: Allegations of Fake Followers and Misleading Metrics

A prominent figure in the cryptocurrency community is facing allegations regarding the legitimacy of his social media influence following his recent accolade as the “best content creator” at a major crypto event. The accusations, initiated by a well-known investigator in the field, suggest that this influencer utilized automated bots to inflate his social media metrics, misleading followers about his genuine reach and influence.

The investigator highlighted that this practice could contravene regulations set by the United States Federal Trade Commission, which prohibits the use of artificial means to manipulate social media indicators like followers and engagement. In response to the backlash, the influencer, known as Professor Crypto, has not addressed the allegations publicly. However, he has started to remove certain posts that displayed his award win at the DeGen Summit in Singapore earlier this month.

The DeGen Summit was part of the TOKEN2049 series and celebrated individuals recognized as “Key Opinion Leaders” (KOLs) in the crypto space. These KOLs are typically established experts whose insights can significantly shape industry trends. With over 1.34 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, Professor Crypto has been creating content about crypto exchanges, wallets, and trending projects since at least August 2018. Interestingly, his social media activity raises questions, as his account on X, which dates back to February 2018, has seen only 102 posts and a modest engagement from a relatively small follower base.

Compounding the controversy, some industry figures have expressed unfamiliarity with the influencer prior to his recent award, suggesting he may not have the influence he claims. This situation continues to unfold as the crypto community awaits further developments.
