Batten Challenges Misconceptions: Bitcoin’s Environmental Benefits Misrepresented

Daniel Batten, a notable figure in the cryptocurrency sector and advocate for Bitcoin , asserts that a single commentary from Alex de Vries in 2018 has significantly influenced the widespread misconceptions regarding Bitcoin ’s environmental impact. In a recent discussion, Batten pinpointed this commentary as the starting point for what he terms “junk science” surrounding Bitcoin and its energy consumption. Although Batten did not disclose the specific remarks, he has previously criticized a May 2018 report from de Vries titled “ Bitcoin ’s Growing Energy Problem,” which aimed to highlight the environmental costs associated with Bitcoin mining.

Batten pointed out that a considerable number of academic articles and media reports over the years have relied heavily on de Vries’ metrics. This reliance has led to widespread misinformation, causing many decision-makers in investment, regulation, and policy to overlook studies that present evidence for the environmental advantages of Bitcoin . He noted that of the last 15 academic papers published on the subject, 13 support the premise that Bitcoin can have a positive environmental impact.

While de Vries maintains a Bitcoin Electronic Waste Monitor, indicating substantial electronic waste attributed to Bitcoin , Batten disputes the accuracy of the energy use metrics presented. He argues that Bitcoin ’s energy consumption is not directly linked to transaction volume and can grow significantly without a proportional increase in emissions. This contention has garnered traction as various academic publications have challenged de Vries’ methods.

Batten also observed a shift in media narratives, with many leading outlets beginning to discuss Bitcoin ’s environmental benefits rather than solely focusing on its drawbacks. Despite this progress, he emphasized the ongoing need for education regarding Bitcoin mining’s role in climate action. Notably, research suggests that over half of Bitcoin mining activities now originate from sustainable energy sources, indicating a gradual move toward more eco-conscious practices in the sector.
